Children at Work:
Many young children lived in poverty. They had to go out and work to help their often large families. This was the only way to get money. Children got paid less than adults. Victorian children often started work from the age of five. They would do jobs on farms, in factories and in homes. Many boys also went to sea and girls became housemaids. Children also worked and sold flowers, matches and ribbon on the streets.
Children in Factories:
Industrialisation meant that Britain had many jobs. Machine now did the jobs that people had previously done by hand. Company owners employed children because they were cheap and could crawl under the machines because they were small. Many children worked in cotton mills. This work was very tough but there were no laws to protect the children until 1874 when children under the age of ten were banned from working in factories.
