Voting System and Elections in NZ
NZ has elections every 3 years. We elect a party, not a person, to be leaders for 3 years. Whoever is the leader of the elected party gets to be the Prime Minister. A election is a referendum, where the public votes for who to have has a leader. Each person gets 2 votes. One vote is to be used for a member of parliament to represent their electorate in their area while the other vote is to be used for a party of your choice. An electorate is your area that you live in. 120 people are elected. in total. The type of voting system that NZ has is MMP, meaning Mixed Member Proportional. For people to be able to vote they must be a NZ citizen, and must be over 18 years of age. There are 120 seats in the parliament house. For a party to be rightfully elected, they must won the most seats in the parliament. The winning party is then the leading party for the next 3 years. New Zealand's type of government is a Democracy.
